ARCHDIOCESE OF LILONGWE

The Archdiocese of Lilongwe is comprised of 50 Parishes and covers seven districts of the Central Region of Malawi: Lilongwe, Mchinji, Kasungu, Dowa, Ntchisi, Salima, and Nkhotakota. It covers a geographical area of 24,025 square km and has a Catholic population of 1.1 million and a total population of 6,014,326 according to the 2018 census.
The Archdiocese of Lilongwe whose mission is continuation of Christ’s healing ministry, achieved through the promotion of human life and the provision of preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services in a holistic manner undertakes multiple pastoral, social development and investment initiatives.
The Vicariate of Nyasa was erected on 12th February 1897, including the whole of Malawi. The name Nyasa Vicariate was changed to Likuni on 12th July 1951 and finally, it became Lilongwe
on 20th June 1957. It was raised to a status of a Diocese on 25th April 1959. Lilongwe was created a Metropolitan Circumscription on 9th February 2011.
The archdiocese is led by Most Rev. George Desmond Tambala and assisted by Rt. Rev. Vincent Mwakhwawa.
Pastoral Work

mission of evangelization, spiritual formation and social service.
Social Development
The social development initiatives aim to promote holistic human development by addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges in alignment with Catholic Social Teaching. Some of the intiatives will include: Community Reforestation Project, School Infrastructure Renovation and Promotion of Access to Education, Civic Education and Promotion of Peaceful Elections, Sustainable Livelihoods and Climate Resilience, Health and Hygiene Promotion, Plastic Waste Management.

The archdiocese operates various business investment ventures that generate income for its sustenance. These include Msamba Center, St. Francis Lake Cottage, Namitete Furniture and Joinery, Centenary Bank Limited, and Mlare Farm among others.
